Biographical / Historical
Like Third Ward, Charlotte’s Fourth Ward is the combination of an old section and a new section. The older area of Fourth Ward remains largely residential and the newer area extends beyond the Southern Railway tracks.
The residential area features several homes designated as historic properties, as well as apartment buildings. Along with the residential properties are churches (First Presbyterian Church, First United Methodist Church, First Associated Reform Presbyterian Church, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church), hospitals, stores, business offices, and other institutions.
One of the better-known industries in Fourth Ward was the Interstate Milling Company, which was founded by Myers Park businessman Charles Moody in the early 20th century. Also widely known was the Charlotte Cotton Mill on Fifth and Graham Streets.
Cemeteries also populated Fourth Ward, including Elmwood Cemetery and Pineville Cemetery. Many of Charlotte’s leaders are buried there.
