Content Description
The 37th Regiment Civil War Collection, 1861-1897, contains materials that are divided into four series: correspondence, financial records, legal documents, and soldier histories. Materials are dated 1861-1897. The outlier materials consist of correspondence to and from John Nicholson between 1871-1897.
Series 1: Correspondence, 1871-1897, includes letters written to and from John Nicholson. Examples of correspondents are Albert F. Montgomery, the Daughters of the Confederacy, and David B. Rea (who rode with North Carolina’s 1st Cavalry under General Stonewall Jackson’s leadership).
Series 2: Financial Records, 1869-1874, consists of a ledger with names and dollar figures that may refer to payments from the local Sons of Confederate Veterans Camp; a photocopy from an original receipt from General Daniel Harvey Hill to Nicholson; a mortgage loan putting up his future crops as collateral.
Series 3: Legal Documents, 1873, contains one note deputizing Nicholson to issue a warrant.
Series 4: Soldier Histories, 1861-1865, includes photocopies from North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865: A Roster.

Biographical / Historical
John B. Nicholson was a Civil War Infantryman who fought under the leadership of General Daniel Harvey Hill, transferring into the 37th Regiment Co. I in January 1862. He enlisted as a Private and was promoted to Corporal in February 1863. He also served in Co. G in North Carolina’s 34th Infantry.
In May 1862, Nicholson was listed as a prisoner of war in Hanover Court House, Virginia, after being wounded in the left shoulder. The following month, he was hospitalized in Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island. Once healed, he transferred to Fort Monroe, Virginia, and was then exchanged and paroled in September in Aiken’s Landing, Virginia. Nicholson was wounded again in June 1864 in Petersburg, Virginia, and later listed as a prisoner of war in Petersburg in April 1865.
