Content Description

The Political Collection consists primarily of materials associated with Mecklenburg County and North Carolina State, however there are some items from Union County, as well as the National level. Many of the items are formerly from the Ephemera Collection.

The collection spans from 1885-2016, with the bulk encompassing sample voting ballots from 1947-2016. The series consists of bills, correspondence, organizational records, promotional materials and voting materials. Materials are organized into three series: Counties, 1903-2016; State, 1927-2001; National, 1885-1976.

Abstract

This collection spans items of political relevance for the Carolinas between 1885-2016. The collection consists primarily of sample voting ballots for Charlotte-Mecklenburg and campaign paraphernalia. Items of particular interest in this collection include: a ticket to the 1885 Grand Inauguration Ball for President Grover Cleveland; a poll book from 1928; a signed letter from Franklin Delano Roosevelt during his term as Governor of the State of New York; a souvenir program from the 1936 Green Pastures Rally at which President F. D. Roosevelt was a speaker.

This collection includes bills, correspondence, organizational records, promotional materials and voting materials.

Arrangement

Materials are organized into three series:

Series 1: Counties, 1903-2016, includes organizational records; promotional materials; voter education materials. The predominant items among the voter education materials are sample ballots. The most notable item of the collection is a letter from Franklin D. Roosevelt while the Governor of New York.

Series 2: State, 1927-2001, encompasses bills; correspondence; committee directories; printed materials; promotional materials; voter education materials.

Series 3: National, 1885-1976, encompasses Grover Cleveland Inaugural Ball program; printed materials; voter education materials.
