Biographical / Historical

“The Book Shop,” opened in Charlotte in 1915, and was owned and operated by the Brockmann & Legerton Company. Herbert Victor Brockmann (1892-1949), was the manager of the store. Two years later, Herbert and his brothers, Charles Raven Brockmann (1889-1970), took over interest in the store as Brockmann and Company. Together, they owned and operated the Brockmann Bookstore from 1917-1928, when the store closed. The bookstore was located at 210 South Tryon Street. Following the closure of the store, Brockmann accepted a position as the advertising manager of the H.W. Wilson Company in New York. He later went on to become the assistant director of the Mecklenburg County Public Library from 1943 to 1959. He wrote several books during this time, including The Hornets’ Nest, the Story of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, which he co-wrote with LeGette Blythe.
