Biographical / Historical

In 1905, brothers James and Benjamin Duke founded the Southern Power Company, which in 1924 became known as the Duke Power Company. Its headquarters is in Charlotte, North Carolina, primarily serving the Piedmont region of the Carolinas. The Duke brothers worked very closely with William States Lee, an electrical engineer, and brothers Walker and Robert Wylie, founders of the Catawba Power Company.

Initially providing power to the mill companies, Duke Power boomed following the end of World War II. By 1997, Duke Power had grown tremendously, and merged with PanEnergy to create Duke Energy. Nine years later, Duke Energy and Cinergy Corp. merged. Another union with Progress Energy came in 2012, followed by the acquisition of Piedmont Natural Gas in 2016.

Today, Duke Energy is the largest electric utility in the United States, providing service to the Carolinas, Tennessee, Florida, Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Focusing on the future, Duke Energy aims at innovation in environmental and economic sustainability.
