Biographical / Historical

The Charlotte Opera Association (now known as Opera Carolina) was originally founded to enhance the community with Opera performances through their mission to “elevate the quality of life throughout the region’s diverse communities”. In its early years, Opera Carolina depended heavily on volunteers to design costumes, sets, sing in the chorus, fill leading roles, and help with administrative and financial tasks. As of 2019, 90% of the company lives locally in the Charlotte region. Annually, Opera Carolina serves approximately 70,000 people. There is also a strong focus on education, as demonstrated by the Education Department and community programs.

The Charlotte Opera Association was founded in 1949 by a group of professional and amateur lovers of opera. The Association was renamed Opera Carolina after merging with North Carolina Opera in 1986, and as of 2019, remains as the largest opera company in the Carolinas.
