Biographical / Historical
Donald Ralph Martin was born to Otis R. and Eva Lena Griffey Martin on September 16, 1917, in Malvern, Iowa. The family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, while Martin was still a child. Martin was an Army photographer during World War II and served as a staff photographer in Camp Butner, North Carolina. Following the war’s end, Martin moved to Charlotte and began working for the Tom Franklin Studio, which also served as the photographers for the Charlotte News. Martin was a prolific photographer, winning numerous awards for his work. He also maintained membership in several professional organizations.
Don Martin died on March 31, 1999 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is buried at Forest Park-Lawndale Cemetery in Houston, Texas.
