Indoor relief

Scope Note: Mecklenburg County followed the models of "indoor relief" and "outdoor relief" simultaneously: It maintained a poor house, which in the census of 1850 and of 1860 showed no more than a half dozen residents, while at the same time authorizing direct payments to citizens on a case-by-case basis. In 1870, the Board of County Commissioners decided to regularize the system once and for all and to offer assistance only through the poor house.

Abstract
The Mecklenburg County Poor House (1833-1870) was created from County funds to serve members of the community who were unable to afford proper medical care. In 1870, the Poor House became known as the Mecklenburg County Home (1870-1972), and in 1956, Green Acres Rest Home for the Aged (1956-1983) was founded as a new rest home. This collection contains one register belonging to the Mecklenburg County Home with entries dated 1902-1942. The register is in good condition.
